Water Bottle Project
As I prepared to graduate from the University of British Columbia, I wanted to make something fun and learn new skills. At the start of this project, I had never used a lathe before.
OopsWhile adjusting the height on the tool rest, the cast iron armature it was attached to broke. Luckily, I had enough welding experience to repair it and resume working. After grinding down the rough surface and carving a bevel into the edge with an angle grinder, I welded it together temporarily using a mild steel filler wire. The Frederic Wood Theatre Scene shop is not equipped with the correct welding rod for oxy-acetylene welding, so a temporary repair would have to do.

Shaping and BoringWith the tool repaired, I shaped the neck down and replaced the support point with a drill chuck and Forstner bit. Because the bits were extremely dull, I had to bore the hole in several stages. First using a 1-inch bit, then 1 and 5/8, then 2-1/8. I would cut an inch of depth with each bit in sequence, giving them time to cool between uses. Because of the width of the drill chuck, I couldn't do the complete pre-drill in one attempt.
